Once a podcast is produced it needs to be accessible to the world and this is achieved by having the sound files hosted at a specialised hosting service then listed in places like iTunes and Google Podcasts.
Podcasts work by RSS Feed which allows digital devices (such as podcast apps on phones) to discover them.
iTunes is the biggest distributor of podcasts and the Apple Podcast app, which is native on the iPhone and iPad, is the most used for listening.
Android users need to download a third-party app to listen to podcasts. There are several available, both free and paid, including the recently released Google Podcast app (which will work on most newer phones - without requiring download - simply by searching a podcast by name).
Your sound files will need to be hosted by a specialised service and the three we recommend are Libsyn, Blubrry and Fireside.fm.
All are viable options and offer varying degrees of control over web pages and other ancillary services. Each, though, performs their main task well, that being to reliably make your podcast available to your listeners.
Hosting services generally charge according to the amount of data you upload and download but basic plans to cover a single, one hour show per month, start at around US$5 per month.
A fortnightly or weekly show of similar length could easily be covered by US$15 or so per month.
You will need to submit cover art for your show which is the equivalent of a logo.
This is an important consideration as changing logos after your show becomes popular can be problematic.
There are several options here including engaging a graphic artist (not cheap but gets excellent results), freelance services like Fiverr or, if you’re moderately confident, try doing your own for free at Canva.
